cannot save a word document; dialogue box will not open

When i click on save or save as; save dialogue box does not open and I cannot
even name my file. if i close the document the "do you want to save" dialogue
box appears; when i click yes it does nothing; when i click no it closes
without saving.

Try repairing the Office installation:
.. In word 2000-2003, see Help|Detect & Repair.
.. In Word 2007, see Word Options|resources|Run MS Office Diagnostics
Alternatively, you can try repairing your Office installation via the Windows Control Panel.
