HAve just confirmed the problem using Word 2003 on XP Pro; Word 2000 on Win
98SE works OK.

Uninstall HotFix 885250. Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and
make sure that the Show Updates check box at the top of the dialog is
checked. Then scroll down to KB885250 and uninstall it.

The problem seems to be restricted to users with a peer-to-peer network,
using a Windows 98 PC as a server. Please call Microsoft and report this
problem (see
http://www.support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=8101&gprid=273354 )
: note calls for reporting HotFix bugs are free.

Thanks for your excellent help but I just figured that myself. I'm reporting
this to MS as I post this.

We having been experiencing a very similar problem for the past 2/3 weeks
(WinXP home clients trying to save in Word and Excel to a Win98SE server).
The only difference is that it's not restricted to "save as" - for us, we
get the same error message with a normal "save". However, if we open an
existing file on the Win98 file server, say a Word doc, we can edit it and
save the updated document quite happily - so this problem appears to only
affect the saving of new documents or documents under a new file name. We're
still using Office97 and Office2000 on our machines.

Removing HotFix KB885820 does seem to have restored normal functionality.

Interestingly, this problem also seems restricted to MS Office. We do not
seem to get this error with CorelDraw (we could save new documents quite
happily in CorelDraw with the HotFix still in place) and it also doesn't
stop us using a file manager or Windows Explorer to drag & drop a new file
onto the Win98 file server. Curious.

Have used the link you've provided to email the problem to MS (I'm not in
the US, so can't use the phone numbers).

Thanks, David

Go back to Windows Update site and click on the History option. That will
show which updates you have downloaded and installed: it will confirm that
you have installed the offending HotFix.

If it confirms that you have installed it, then go to your Windows Folder
and you should see a list of HotFixes listed. Select the correct HotFix
folder, open the folder and double-click on the Uninstall exe in that
folder.

(Make sure that you have the option to see hidden and system folder set in
Explorer.)

Unofficially, this is the current advice for a workaround.

Subject: MS05-011 Security Update breaks saving from Excel and Word to
Windows 9x shared folder

This issue is under investigation for a possible fix.

The MS05-11 security update for Windows XP and Windows 2000 will cause
saving files from Excel and Word (versions 2000 and 2002 are verified) to
fail with an error ("The folder <name> isn't accessible..."). Windows is
evaluating a fix, but for now only the workarounds listed below are
available.

1. Save the file locally then move it to the Windows 98 machine.
2. Another possible workaround is to do the following:
When you type the name, use the tab key to move focus to the cancel button
and then click on Save.
OR
Click on CANCEL, hold down the mouse and then move the mouse off the cancel
button, then let go of the mouse button) and then click on Save.
4. Upgrade Windows 98 to either Windows 2000 or Windows XP

Obviously, none of these are great workarounds

Terry
