cannot save changes to global template in office

Recently i've noticed that i can no longer save files in Microsoft office
2003, and the following error message appears.

Cannot save changes to global template because it was opened with read only
access. Then the computer asks me if i want to save the file in a temporary
folder. I have not changed any settings in office that could have caused this
error.
I have recently been plagued with adware, spyware and trojan horses etc.
I have got AVG anti-virus software, i am using the windows xp firewall, and
i have spyware blaster and spybot installed. However i seem to keep getting
the same adware, spyware etc even after removing it.
Is it possible that the viruses etc have caused these changes in office
settings, as they already have disabled my cookies, and i have to sign in
manually to hotmail, amazon etc.
Any help on the office problem and any advice on the virus problem would be
much appreciated, i have already tried system restore this doesn't resolve my
problem.

Cheers

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas, but if you continue to get spyware, you might
want to consider getting a better firewall.
