cannot save files in word 8

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I just moved to a new imac and updated from Word 2000 to Word 2008. When I open any Word 2000 document in 2008 it goes into (Read-Only) [Compatibility Mode], but when I try to save it, in docx, I get the message "Word cannnot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write protected." My disk has 1.8TB of free space and it is not write protected--I've checked and also saved things in other programs.

You have not said which updates you have applied to either OS X or Office
2008. That's your first step, to ensure the system is fully up-to-date: it
won't work on OS 10.6 until it is.

I have everything up to date--OX 10.6.2 and Word Mac 12.2.4

I can save a new document I create, but not old ones that I open, either as .docx or .doc with a new name.

Is there a step to update old flies? The Compatibility Report says that "no compatibility issues were found."

This is not a "Compatibility Issue" so the compatibility report tells you
nothing.

This is a Mac OS X bug, for which Apple recently released patch 10.6.3,
which is supposed to fix it.

Try applying 10.6.3 from Apple.

Cheers

You were right, I hadn't updated to ox 10.6.3, but after I did, the problem has not gone away.

It is slightly different, though. It's the same if I try to save old files in .doc with a new name, but now if I try to save them as .docx it seems to go through with the saving process (no messages appear and the save dialog box goes away) but no saved file appears either.

Struggling to get enough information to answer here.

Where are you saving to? How did you set that machine up? Which user-IDs
are involved?

The more detail you give us, the more chance we have of helping you.

Cheers

I figured it out! It was that the permissions for each of my folders had not included the account I was using to log in. I transferred all my stuff from my old mac using a network connection using the mac software for that (I forget what it is called.)

To set up my new mac I used the same account name I had used on the old, so it seems to have abbreviated the old account name, assigned that to the permissions for each folder (along with administrator) but not the new account. When I checked the permissions, I saw what looked like my account name as having permissions as being read and write.

What will have to do is open the information box on each folder, in each level, and add add the log in account from the Select a new user or group menu.

Thank you so much for all your efforts on my behalf!!

Yep:

Figured it was something like that. The Apple "Migration" application seems
more aptly named "The Train Wreck". It certainly does just as much damage
:)

Cheers
