cannot save files on cd

Koryn

I cannot save files on to my cd through the save as menu and I have no idea
why. When I try to I get the error message "Word cannot save or create this
file. Make sure the disk you want to save it on is not full,
write-protected, or damaged." If I save the file to my desktop and use Nero
or another burning software I can save the files, but that is the only way.
I never had this problem in Word 97, now I have a new computer with Office
2003 and I can't get it to work. Please help me.

G'Day Koryn,

To save files dynamically to a CD, you need enabling software that 'mounts'
the CD and 'manages' it on behalf of Windows. This software needs to be
started automatically at login time, and remain running all the time. It 'presents'
the CD to Windows as a Read/Write device (which in fact it is not). When
you Edit/Save, the software writes a new directory that ignores the old copy
of the file and writes a new directory and file, gradually using up all the space
on the CD in the process.

The CD is readable only on a PC using InCD until it is 'finalised'. It can
then be read on any PC, but you can no longer write to it.

Since you have Nero, ensure that you have installed Nero InCD and that it
is running and configured correctly.

If you want to be able to use your documents, when working within Word, act
as if your floppy drive does not exist! (This applies to CDRW/CDR drives as
well.)
Don't use Word to:
Open a document on a floppy
Print a document on a floppy
Edit a document on a floppy
Save a document to a floppy (not even a copy)

Word regularly trashes documents on floppy drives!

Instead, work on the document using your hard drive. Copy it back and forth
using Windows.

As Pat explained, there is special software available for writing to CDs.
However, you should _never_ be doing anything on the CD from within Word.
