I am trying to help a friend who is having a bit of an issue with Office XP
on her machine. Her PC is running Windows 98 SE. The issue seems to be that
she cannot save anything from Word, Excel or Powerpoint. In word when you try
and save it says it cannot save the file using the name you have given it due
to a file permission error, when you exit word it gives a similar error about
normal template. In the case of Excel and Powerpoint they both say that the
cannot save the file due to a lack of free memory and diskspace, when 66% of
the RAM is available and there is 59 Gb free on the c: drive. It is formatted
as FAT 32.
I get the same results in normal and safe mode. I have tried "Detect &
Repair", unistalling and trying to install it over the top. The error is
"Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log exists
and is writeable"
After trying Detect & Repair I am now getting the following error when
launch Word,Excel or Powerpoint, Error 1711, Setup cannot write information
to your hard disk.
I have run a scandisk and all is well. I have scanned the hard drive with
Adaware and Spybot. I can copy and paste things in Windows Explorer. I can
also save things in Notepad.
