Cannot save global.mpt [Project 98]

Martin Gerhold

I am using Project on a restricted (company setup) PC that prevents changes made to toolbars etc being saved on exit (the Office folder is write-protected). I can save 'global.mpt' to another location, but can see no way to make Project access the saved file when restarting. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks, Martin

Hi martin,

Two ways:

1. With Project closed, just double-click the global.mpt on Windows
explorer. Projesct is giving a message you can't do that but just ignore
that. The right global is open.
2. If you hate this message: put any file in the same directory as your new
Global and start Project by starting up this file.

So by all means DO NOT START PROJECT THE NORMAL WAY.

Martin,
We had a similar situation at our company. The Global for Project on the
company server was controlled by the IT organization. I needed to be
able to customize toolbars for users in our workgroup. The approach I
took was to create an macro that ran each time a user opened his/her
file. The macro effectively replaced the "controlled" toolbars with our
custom toolbars. However for your case, simply pointing to your custom
Global should work fine. It's been a while since I did this but try the
following:
1. If you don't already have a shortcut Project icon on your desktop,
create one.
2. Right click on the shortcut icon
3. Select "Properties"
4. Hit the "shortcut" tab
5. Type the path of your Global in the "Start in" box
6. Hit OK

Hope this works.

Thank you both - now i just need to decide which method I prefer.

John: I had used a macro solution for the same issue with Excel, but wanted to avoid that if possible (and perhaps i didn't think of it!) - I have since found the registry key to make Excel load an *.xlb from a defined folder, but could not see such a key (or guess its name) for Project.

Thanks again, Martin
