cannot save MS Word 2003 file

M

Matt

One of my users reported the following problem, and I just
encountered it on my system. When saving a new file to a
personal directory on a network drive, the following
message appears:

The folder 'H:\Documents\this is the filename.doc isn't
accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable
location, protected with a password, or the filename
contains a / or \.

However, if we accept the recommended filename (supplied
by Word), the file saves properly. We're running Windows
2000, Office 2003 and Netware 4.11.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your posting.

I cannot reproduce this issue on my side. Now I would like to know the
following information.

1. Is the network drive shared on a NetWare server or Windows 2000 server?
2. Does the problem occur if you enter the UNC path and save the file?
3. What is the file name which you changed to and it worked?
4. Is the network share a file system (Dfs) share?
5. What is the meaning of "personal directory "?
6. Does the problem occur on other Win2000 network shared drives?
7. What is the DNS domain name and NetBIOS name of your domain?

I am looking forward to your response.

Bob Qin

Sorry for the late response. I hope you are able to help, as the problem
continues to occur. Here are the answers to your questions:

1. The shared drive resides on a Netware 4.11 server.
2. yes
3. The file saves successfully *only* if the default filename supplied by
the Office program is used. For example, let's say I open a blank document
in Word 2003 and type "The quick brown fox jumps". I then choose save or
save as, and Word suggests a filename of "The quick brown fox jumps.doc". If
I press enter or click OK at this point, the file saves. However, if I
modify Word's suggested filename (to "matt.doc", for example), the error
message appears and the save fails.
4. I'm not sure. Does this term apply to Netware or only to Windows servers?
5. By personal directory, I mean a user's private shared directory (such as
H:\johndoe\documents\...). However, I have noticed the error message on
other shared drives, not just users' personal directories.
6. All of our servers are Netware based, but I have noticed the error
message on two Windows 2000 clients--mine and another user's.
7. I'd prefer not to share this in a public forum. If it's critical to
finding a fix, I will e-mail you directly, if you'd like?

The exact error message, for reference, is:
"The folder 'H:\Documents\samplefilename.doc' isn't accessible. The folder
be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the
filename contains a / or \."

H:\ is mapped to \\SERVER\USER\JSMITH, where JSMITH represents a username

Thank you for your help.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your update.

I have done some research on the issue, it seems to be a problem with
Novell Netware 4.11.

Now I recommend that you install the Novell Netware 4.11 server patch
(Mixmod6.exe).

http://support.novell.com/servlet/filedownload/uns/pub/mixmod6.exe/

In addition, please try to use the following method as appropriate for your
situation to save a document on a Novell 4.11 server.

Before you save a document with an 8.3 file name, browse to the root of the
map root drive, and then browse down through the subfolders. Then save the
document.

If you have any other questions or additional information concerning the
issue, feel free to let me know. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,
Bob Qin
