cannot save or quit

Version: v.X
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I've recently upgraded to leopard.
I'm encountering problems with Word (and Excel) for Mac. Essentially, I cannot select the print or save/save as options. Also, when selecting "quit", the application does not quit so that I'm always obliged to force quit the application.
Can you help?

In order to get help with this you'll need to indicate *exact* OS X version
& *exact* Officer X version - each is an X.X.X, such as 10.5.2 or 10.1.9, as
well as what you mean by "cannot select" - are the commands missing, are
they dimmed in the menu, does the menu not open, is the fog too dense...?

In the meantime, run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions to see if that
makes any difference.

Bob needs the versions of your software as well as your OS.

I suspect that you have not applied Update 10.1.9. But without your exact
software levels, that's just a wild guess.

You can get 10.1.9 here:

Thanks for the details, but you omitted one - Is Office X updated to 10.1.9?
If not, you should do that first, then repair permissions again & see if
that resolves it. If you're already there or if the problem persists...

The next step is to reset your menu: Go to Tools> Customize Toolbars & Menus
- Toolbars page, click the *name* of the Menu Bar, then click the Reset
button. When you OK out that should have it fixed. Make some change in a doc
(even if you undo the change) Save & Quit Word, then launch again to make
sure the fix holds. If it does you should be good to go.

If the fix doesn't take (or doesn't *stay* fixed) it means you may have a
damaged preferences file. The question would then be whether you have any
3rd party "helper" programs that might be interfering with Word's ability to
save the change to your Menu, so that should be ruled out first. If you need
to do so, have a look at the following web page for instruction on how to
locate & test/replace the prefs file:

Check this first: http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Add-Ins.html

Then go here: http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html

i'm running office 10.1.4.
I've tried to update to 10.1.9 as suggested. However, when the download is completed and I click on the update icon to start the installation of the file, it says that the application office X 10 1 9 update quit unexpectedly.
sounds like a nightmare....

Although I must echo the sentiments voiced by Clive I can't blame you for
wanting to not upgrade, so if you intend to continue trying to get X
cranking in Leopard:

It sounds like the download may have failed to come through intact. Where
did you get it from? Try again or use this link:
