Cannot save or Save as, in word 2003 with SP3

Dan Spevack

When I dutifully upgraded to SP3 the save, and save as,
dialog boxes do nothing in word. (excel works fine).
I checked on the fast saves dialog box. It was still checked.
Tried unchecking and rechecking. Didn't help.
This isn't the fast saves issue.
Also tried typing something and closing the program.
It asks if I want to save my work. I say yes.
Then nothing happens.
I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling MS office, and installing
all patches other than sp3. My computer dutifully reinstalled
SP3 at night without me knowing. I don't want to reinstall again.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Allow Fast Saves has long been a bit unreliable and Service Pack 3, although it leaves the dialog, disables it.

If you hold the ctrl key when starting Word can you save? If so then you may have a damaged registry key or an interfering add-in,
but with all of the Office apps closed restart the PC then use
Start=>Search to recycle all files found with a search of
~$*.*;*.tmp

You can change the behavior at http://update.microsoft.com to have updates download but not install until you okay them.

Bob,
Thank you for the prompt reply.
I searched the add/remove programs and just had windows remove the update.
So my behavior is back to normal working mode. I will try reinstalling the
update
soon and check for the behavior you suggested.
What exactly does holding the control key down when you start word do?
Also you say " Start=>Search to recycle all files found with a search of
~$*.*;*.tmp
I've never seen a "recycle" command. does this put everything with a tmp
extension
in the recycle bin? I'd like to understand a command before implementing it.

Hi Dan,

Yes, the default behavior for deleting a search result is to send it to the recycle bin, although sometimes the .tmp files that
firewall and antivirus software uses will be in that list and can't be deleted (which is okay).

Bob,

Until now, I never new MS Office/word had a safe mode.
Exactly what doesn't get loaded in safe mode?

Hi Dan,

This is a MS article on the basics of it for Word:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827706/en-us?FR=1
and another tool, the Word /a troubleshooting startup switch
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826857/en-us?FR=1
and an article comparing the two tools :)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813589/en-us?FR=1

The specific feature set of each evolves a bit with each new version but the basic idea is the same, they're for troubleshooting and
isolating problems, rather thn for something to use all of the time.
