Cannot save permissions!

J

Jan M.

Hello everyone.

I just created a new group. The problem is that whatever the category I add
to the group, none of the high level permissions is selected.

I don't have the problem with existing groups, for example: In the
"Adminstrator" group, adding the category "My organization" will reveal that
all permissions are "Allowed".

How can category permissions be different from one group to another?

Which of the following is not functionning properly: the software or the
user???

Hope somebody can help.

When you create a new Group and add Categories to the Group, you must select
each Category individually and then select the appropriate values in the
Permissions grid. The permissions grid represents the "intersection"
between the Group and the Categories. Generally speaking, Categories
control what you can see, Groups control what you can do, and the
intersection between Groups and Categories controls "what you can do with
what you can see." Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,

Thank you for replying to this message.

I understand what categories and groups are, but I still don't know how to
set the permissions properly:

1)I thought that I had to set groups permissions in the "Modify groups"
permission grid and category permissions in the "Modify category" grid. Once
done, adding a category to a group would force the resulting permissions to
be at the "intersection" of the category and the group. Why do I have to
select values for a categoy every time I add it to a group? Isn't the
category the same whatever the group?

2) Why is the permission grid present on two pages (Modify group and modify
category)? What is the difference or relation between the two? How does it
work?

3)Suppose I want to create a new group and a new category, what procedure
would you propose?

4)I have read Gary Chefetz book "Implementing enterprise Portfolio
Management with MSPS 2002". I still don't understand how to set high level
permissions for groups as per table 10-1 and categories as per table 10-3.
The way it's working right now, there can be as many "My organization"
categories as there are groups that have access to the category since I can
change the category settings for each group selected!

As I said earlier, either my software doesn't function properly or the user
is missing something.

Thank you for taking the time...I really need an explanation

1. This is how the software works. On the Modify Group page, you must
manually set the Permissions for access to the objects specified in each
Category.

2. The same Permissions grid is presented on both pages because it is the
same Permissions grid. Because it represents the intersection between
Groups and Categories, you can set the permissions on either page.

3. Create the new Category first and specify the Projects, Resources, and
Views accessible through the Category. Do not include any Groups and then
save the new Category. Create the new Group, include the new Category, set
the Permissions for the Category in the Group, then set the Global
Permissions for the new Group.

4. If you are using Project Server 2003, I would recommend you get our new
book specifically for administrators using Project Server 2003. In this
book, we present expanded information on how to understand and onfigure
Categories and Groups. The problem is not the software. The problem is
your lack of comprehension about this complex subject. Please know,
however, I do not mean this as an insult. This is a difficult subject, and
I would encourage you to keep "plugging away" until you understand it. :)

Hope this helps.

Dale, you helped me a lot. As for your book, I've got one in the mail already.

Thank you very much!
