Cannot save PowerPoint to Server with Leopard

Hi,
ever since upgrading to Mac OS 10.5 Lepoard I cannot save PowerPoint
files to my Xserve running 10.3.9 anymore.
Sometimes I even get errors when trying to open PowerPoint files. PP
is under the impression that the file is in use. So I can only save it
under a different name. But the same thing pops up again the next time
I hit save.
I remember I used to have this problem before with Mac OS 10.1 or so.
But it is definitely something about 10.5 this time.
Anyone any ideas?
This is really problematic as you might imagine.

I have exactly this problem ever since upgrading to Leopard. It's true of files on MS servers and on Linux servers - i.e. anything using SMB. Was fine in Tiger using office 2004. It's worse in office 2008, as the unsaved file seems to be set to zero bytes too - i.e. you lose the file.
