When I try to save a document from my C drive to a memory stick(E drive) I
get a "can't complete file permission error message" and it won't save. Any
ideas?

Thanks

Never save to removable media. It probably won't save because Word needs to
create and overwrite and delete temp files in the active directory (the REM
Media) whenever it saves. You don't notice this when you save to a HDD
because it is so fast, but flash memory sticks are not at all flash! Always
save to your HDD first and then COPY the file to the REM Media. Vice Versa
when opening too.

I have been having a problem saving or renaming MS Word files to a usb flash
drive. It will not allow me to save files with more than about 8 characters
in the name. I get a MS Word error message 'The directory or file cannot be
created'. This has just started as I had longer file names in the past. I
can save the file to my hard drive without a problem. What would cause this
to change? There is plenty of room on the drive. Thanks for the help.

Did you _read_ the post you replied to? Do not use removable media from
within Word. Period. Act as if they are not there when you are working in
Word.

Yes I did read the first post. After further investigation the problem is
with the usb drive. But I do not know what caused the problem. I had been
using this drive to save Word, Excel, and pdf files with not problem for
about one year. It recently started allowing file names no more than 10
chacters. I thought this odd as I had only used about 4% of its capacity
with about 180 files. After removing some of the files, I can now save files
with longer names or rename them. I have contacted the usb drive company,
Micro Advantage, to see what can be done to correct this. Thanks for the
advise.
