Cannot save to mounted filesystem.

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel When I access an Excel file on a smb mounted server, I can open it fine, but when I try to save, I get a message like

Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'phs3ps:docs:CEE28210'.

/Volumes/phs3ps is the name of the mount point and docs is the directory the excel file is in. The CEE28210 file is actually created as an empty file, and I get one generated every time I try to save.

This also occurs if I have mounted the remote directory with sshfs, so I don't think it's specifically a samba thing. It doesn't happen with other apps (e.g. I can edit a file mounted remotely in emacs and save it again without complaint.)

When Excel saves a file, it creates a temp file, saves to that file,
deletes the original, and then renames the temp to the original. so,
make sure you have all necessary privliges on the share to create and
delete files.

Thanks for the reply,

I think I do have all the necessary permissions: Whether this directory is mounted via Samba or sshfs I can read, write, create and modify files in other applications, including in the finder or terminal. The temp file (I presume the file called CEE28210 in my example above) even gets created, albeit with zero size. When I look at the permissions of the temp file in Finder it says "you can read and write" and in the terminal it says -rw- which is what I'd hope.

As a followup, this effect only occurs with .xlsx files. Excel is able to save .xls files on the mounted filesystem. Does that help? It baffles me.

To followup again, tweaking the samba configuration seems to fix this, though I still don't understand why it wouldn't work over sshfs, and why other apps are not affected. Presumably something to do with extended attributes

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can shed any more light on this.

We have 5 MacbookPros sharing a NAS device which is mounted with full permissions. There are also 6PCs connecting to the same NAS.

We have had no issues for the last 10 months when we started getting our first macs.

Then last week, we started getting the exact same message. It started with just one or 2 excel files now ALL files produce this message when saving from MAC to NAS

If we save to the desktop and then copy instead of "save" we get a message "The operation cant be completed because you dont have the necessary permissions to access some of the items.

We have tried saving as both .xls and .xlsx

This only happens in Excel.

There are no problems with Word, PPoint, jpegs or other file types.

Any suggestions or advice would be great.

Answered your earlier... Please do not multi-post on the same issue, keep
it all in one thread if you can.
