Cannot Save To SharePoint Document Libraries

P

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Sharepoint thread or here, but this seems
right...

I've got a user with a group-policy deployed copy of Office 2003
Professional. When he opens a document from a Sharepoint document library
(by choosing "edit in Microsoft Word (or Excel)), he can open the document
and edit it. However, when he goes to save the file, he cannot save back to
the document library (it does not even appear in the "save as" dialog... it
defaults to My Documents). Also, he does not have the "My Site" item in the
list of "places" in the open or save dialogs. A few more things:

1. The user CAN open and save to document libraries when logged-in to
another workstation, so it would seem that Sharepoint permissions are not an
issue.

2. The user DOES have all three of the "Sharepoint Services" items
installed (under the Office Tools section of setup/configuration).

3. The user DOES have a My Site, and when he visits the site, the "Set as
Office default website" link IS available. The user can click on the link
and gets notified that the default site will be set to My Site, and that My
Site will be available in the open and save dialog boxes. It does NOT appear
in these dialog boxes.

4. Technical for a moment: When I set the default website from My Site, I
notice a PATH key created in the registry at
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open
Find\Places\UserDefinedPlaces\PersonalSite. My understanding is that after
this path is created, once the user clicks "Open" in an Office program, this
path is converted to a PIDL reference pointing to the site. What I
discovered is that when the user clicks "Open" in an Office program, the path
DISAPPEARS, but no PIDL is put in its place. Maybe something is failing in
the PIDL conversion? I found no indication in the Event Log. Anywhere else
I would look for logs?

5. The user cannot do anything workspace related from within the Office
programs (create a document workspace, or open one by entering the URL in the
"Open" dialog). Any attempt results in a message indicating that the program
could not communicate with the server.

Remember, the user can open and save files to the My Site and other document
libraries from a different workstation. He is an Administrator on his
workstation (but not on the other one he is successful on). Keep in mind too
that the installation is centrally deployed (and for the most part,
configured), so the settings between his workstation and others should be
highly similar.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
