Cannot save word document when first time create

Joe

I am using XP professional and using office 97. When using
Word and creating a new document I cannot save. I can
click on the save icon but nothing happens ... not even an
error message, but when I close the document I get the
message if I want to save the document. This allows me to
save. I cannot 'saveas' or anything like that and it only
happens in Word ... all other apps are OK.
I have a feeling it may be a registry problem ...maybe.

Yes this could be a registry problem. **Be sure to back up the registry first before trying this**
If you're uncomfortable with dealing with the registry, you should probably call support and have them walk you through
this.

To remove the damaged Office 97 registry settings and to register Office 97 again, follow these steps:

NOTE: The following steps remove all user-specific settings for all of the Office programs. You must reconfigure all user-
specific settings manually.

1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

2. In the Open box, type "Regedit" (without the quotation marks), and
then click OK.

3. Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER subtree until you see the following folder:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0

4. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

5. On the Registry menu, click Exit. NOTE: When you quit the Registry
Editor, the changes are saved automatically.

6. Shut down and restart Windows.

7. Start the Office 97 programs to update the registry settings.

Hi Joe,

More than likely the cause is a global template/add-in intercepting
your Save command. First go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If you are able to save documents using the default Save command then
go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins and see if you have any add-ins in
the list. If you do then these are stored in one of your Startup
folders. Word recognizes two Startup folders:

- Office\Startup - located either in the Office installation path or
profile depending on how Office was installed
- Word Startup - this location can be obtained under
Tools/Options/File Locations

Move each file you find out of the folder one at a time in order to
narrow down the exact add-in causing the problem.

Hi Phil,

Out of curiosity, exactly what portion of the Office\8.0 branch of the
Registry has anything to do with the Save or Save As command in Word
aside from the MRU lists for the Save As dialog box and view found
under the \Office\8.0\Common\Open Find\Microsoft Word branch?

Additionally, IMHO advising to delete the key this is a bit drastic
since it will reset the majority of the users personalized Office
settings. It's best to *rename* the key so if this does not resolve
the problem the newly created key can be removed and the old key
renamed and all personal setting can be retained. :)
