Windows explorer and the Word dialog viewing options are
set differently. Windows explorer options must be set

View | Folder Options | View

...in Word, you must use the drop-down box at the bottom of
the File | Open dialog to determine which files are shown.

Are you attempting to open a file, other than a *.doc?
