Actually i have 2 problems.I am using MS office 2003 and window xp. I have
two pcs.
1.My words documents have been converted to exe.For example. example.doc,
now appears as example.exe.I cannot open the files now.I have tried to go to
properties and change the exe to doc but it didn't work.I even try to rename
those files but without any success.Hope you can help.
2. My other problem is with my other PC. My words folder appears blank. When
I use window explorer and press on the folders, it appears as though no files
in the folder, but when I check the properties of the folder, there are about
21 files in it and the size of the folders is around 2.4MB.I have tried to
hide and unhide files but it is not working.
Hope you can help me.ASAP

1. Have you tried restarting Windows?

2. Does this apply to all of your folders or just to particular ones? Note
that some folders contain system files which are hidden by default (you can
choose to show them via Folder Options).

Have you manually move documents or folders between computers? How?
Have you recovered documents from some form of backed up media? How?

It sounds like a possible disk FAT corruption. Have you run any clean up
utility recently? (Please don't run any: I just need to know.)

Have Windows and Word been updated? Are you running up to date Anti Virus?

but the problem is still the same.
2. This problem only only obvious in this folder but also in other other doc
and jpeg files BUT not all the files are affected.
Any solution?

1. The Word files that now have an exe extension: if you use Start | Run and
type in

winword /r

and press enter, do they still have the .exe extension? Are they showing as
..EXE in both Windows Explorer and the Word File, Open dialog? Can you select
one using Word, File | Open and actually open it as a document?

2. Are the invisible files invisible from both the File, Open dialog in Word
and in Windows Explorer?

Separately, although you have two computers, you mention three AV utilities.
You should only have one AV installed and operational at a time on a PC.
Which are you actually using? I don't actually suspect AV (unless you are
trying to run all three simultaneously). This sounds like either glary or CC
has screwed up your PCs. I hate both of them and don't believe that either
do anything at all to speed up or resolve errors on PCs. In fact, they often
do the opposite and are totally unnecessary.

Thanks again Terry.
1.The windows asks to insert the installation CD and I am working on it.
2. YES,it is invisible from both.
3. I have all three AV in both my PCS but only AVIRA is activated and the
other two, i use to scan the pc or files from time to time.May be I am phobia.
4.Are you suggesting, I get rid of glary and CC.Can you suggest any other
programs.
Thanks for the help.Hope can get a solution.CAn it due to virus?

I am confident that it is not a virus. Viruses are not that common providing
you take sensible precautions. Both Avira and AVG are good utilities (I've
not had any experience with Panda) but I suggest just using the one and
uninstalling the others. Although they may not be active, they do make
registry changes and uninstalling the others will ensure that there is no
conflict.

I'm sure that your problems are caused by either CC or glary, possibly a
conflict between them, that has caused some damage to the File Allocation
Tables for those folders your disks. Again, I'd recommend uninstalling both
those utilities. I do advocate the regular cleaning out of temp files from
the various folders where they get regularly abandoned, but I am yet to be
convinced that defragmenters or registry cleaners do anything. However, one
product that I can recommend that does not do any damage is Raxco
PerfectSpeed PC Optimizer: though with the qualification that I am not
convinced of the benefits of any of these utilities, but this one seems the
best.

I suggest that you post a question on an appropriate Windows newsgroup about
the FAT problem. There are utilities that may fix this for you, but I am not
familiar with any whereas they should be able to point you at one to help.
