cannot see pictures in design

For some reason, I cannot see the pictures in design view; it shows only
small icons. No problem viewing it in browser or preview.
I am using Windows XP Media Center with FrontPage2003, IIS5.1
Also it is extremely slow to load and I keep loosing Storefront tool bar

What is the "Store Front Tool bar"? Is this some third party product? It
is not a part of Frontpage.

Slow loading could be due to the size of your images (as in file size
(kilobytes), not dimensions). Try optimising the images in your image
editor, and saving as GIF or JPEG.

To insert the images, open the site first (File > Open Site), then open a
page. The import the images (File > Import) and then insert them on the
page(s).
