cannot select item from combo box

I have two fields currently on my form, one is a total, and the other is a
combo box with a list of community colleges. When you choose a community
college the total box changes as it is associated with the specific college.
However, while I can click on the combo box, when I try to choose an item it
beeps and will not allow me to choose, nor does it give me an error message.
I have been double and triple checking the properties and I don't see
anything that would cause this error. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the combo box bound to a field in your form's record source? Is the
record source editable? Does your form allow updates? How does the total box
change after selecting a college?
