cannot "select" line on Word XP doc. Only crosshair appears when .

I have a Word XP document with lines I created when I first made the doc. I
try to go to the draw tools or auto shape but it will not let me select the
line to edit the length. When I hover my mouse, I get a "crosshair that will
only enable me to move the line up or down. Pleae help.
