Cannot send from home/exchange account

Tony Linde

I'm new to Macs & Entourage so forgive me if I'm doing something silly. I
was pleased to see that I could access my university's Exchange server from
home but disappointed when it failed to send (received all the emails,
contacts & calendar items correctly).

Messages were:

Error:
Entourage is unable to access the mail account you are using with the mail
server configured for that account.

Explanation:
The mail account is configured incorrectly in Entourage. Review the mail
account settings for typos and incorrect information (including your own
email address). On the Tools menu, click Accounts. In Accounts, select the
mail account and click Edit. The message has been moved to your Drafts
folder.

Error: -18597
=====

Anyone know what I've done wrong or is this just not possible?

Cheers,
Tony.

Make sure you are sending with your proper Exchange login, not an alias.
The same one used to get the e-mails. Many Exchange accounts refuse to
send e-mail unless you are using the address used to authenticate.

this depends on how you have set up the account in Entourage - there are
two ways.

the first is to enter the address of the server as it appears when
directly connected to the local network - this is usually the name of
the mail server. if you entered this simple name, then you can _only_
connect to the server when on the local network.

the better way is to enter the web address you use to access your
account through Outlook Web Access (OWA) using a web browser. this
usually looks something like
'https://serverName.domainName.com/Exchange'. Put this into the box for
the server address in th account settings. When you use this server
address you can access the account from outside the local network and it
almost always works from inside as well, but this depends on how the
routers are configured.

That was it, Corentin. Many thanks. I thought I did have the address right
but looked in the OWA settings and found it was different.

Is there then no way to have the email (look like it has) come from an
alias? Seems strange that it works under IMAP but not directly through
Exchange.

Cheers,
Tony.

Thanks, Barry. Turned out to be the mail address I was using wasn't
complete. I'll find out tomorrow if it still works from inside the uni :)

That's a setting on the server.
I hate it too, but there is no way around it,
