Cannot share calendar with contact

Using Outlook 2003 with Exchange 2003. When I try to open a shared calendar
using the first name of a contact in my contacts which is also the mailbox
name on the server, I get an error message saying "Unable to display the
folder. Cannot open the mailbox for this user because the user does not have
a mailbox for this server". When I click OK on the message box, the name
shown is the display name for the contact; i. e., full name. The Exchange
mailbox name is Joe, for example, and the contact name is Joe Smith. Is
there some way to actually tell Outlook that the mailbox name on the server
is Joe?

From where are you trying to resolve the name you type? Is this from your
contacts or the GAL?
