Cannot shift objects off sheet

I have one spreadsheet that will not let me insert a cell or row and gives me
the error 'cannot shift objects off sheet'. There are no objects and/or
comments on this sheet, so please don't refer me to the knowledge base
article - already tried that. No hidden columns, cells, rows.... I have
tried deleting all columns and rows from the last cell and this hasn't work.
I have done a diagnose and repair, and updated to SP1. Any ideas?

Thank you.

Did you Save, close, and re open your project? This is necessary sometimes
to "Finalize" the process of deleting all rows and columns not being used.

You could check for merged cells. Then check for hidden shapes. Sometimes if
you delete the rows or columns under a chart, you end up with a 0 pixel
width chart that you don't know is there. You can add a control called
Select Multiple Objects to the Drawing toolbar, in 2003 and I think 2002,
which gives you a dialog for selecting many shapes you can't see (but not
invisible ones: for that you need VBA).

Is there an autofilter range that is at risk of being shifted off sheet?

Failing any of this, you may just have to recreate the sheet from scratch.

This happens when inserting a column into a sheet created with 2003. When inserting a column into a sheet with 2003, it works with no error message. After opening the sheet in 2007, then inserting a column, the error "cannot shift objects off sheet" appear. I have deleted the columns from the edge of the data to the end of the sheet and rows from the bottom of the data to the end of the sheet. I have converted the sheet from .xls to .xlsx and .xlsm (to save the kill the merged cells macro). So far the only thing that works is to open the sheet in 2003 insert the column, save the sheet, then open again in 2007, or copy all the data to a new sheet in a new workbook in 2007. 2007 is not making us more productive.

Has anyone found an answer to this??

Just to confirm I am using excel2007 in compatability mode with xls files
previously created in in excel2002 (and others). My workbook is quite
complex, eg using most but not all columns, using several thousand lines on
each sheet.

However, I have no comments, nor objects, I've never had any charts nor
pivot tables, my spreadsheet is not full, it has no merged cells, yet despite
this if I try to insert a row or column I get the message 'cannot shift
objects off sheet'.

I have referred to Article ID : 211769 even though I am not try to hide
rows, nor columns Last Review : June 7, 2007 Revision : 9.2

....but this does not help, even though I can confirm that if I do ctr shift
i, I get the error message 100185, that the article refers to.

My only options seem to be:
to cut and paste
or to open file in old excel version, insert the row, then save.

After that I can go back to 2007, but whwen I need to insert any further
rows or columns I still have the problem.

Has Microsoft acknowledged that this is a problem sprecific to compatability
mode. Is there a fix? Is there ever likely to be a fix?

Many thanks
