Cannot sign document with digital signature

I am trying to place a digital signature in a word 2007 document. I create
the signature line, and choose my digital signature from several choices, but
each time I get the message that "your signature could not be added to the
document. If your signature requires a smart card please ensure that your
card reader is correctly installed." I do no think my signature requires a
smart card, and cannot find any information on how to resolve this issue.

There are two kinds of digital signatures. What you want is a picture of
your actual signature, which will require that you scan it or otherwise
digitize it, then insert it as a picture (Behind Text if you want it to
appear to sit on the signature line). What you're trying to use is a
"signature" that is applied to the document invisibly to certify its
authenticity; for that you have to have a certificate of some sort, and I
would imagine if you had that you would know more about it than I do.
