Cannot sort

Hello,
I have a db that contains a name field and for some
unknown reason I cannot sort...actually I can't sort ANY
of the fields. The db is taken from a server where user
information (name,address,city,state etc) is inputted to
Access and taken offline for processing. The sort options
are dimmed out...any ideas?? TIA
