Ok Gang, this one's got me up a tree.
Can not get Outlook (MS Office XP Pro version) to load. Error reads: "Can
not start Microsoft Outlook. Outlook requires Outlook Express 4.01 or
greater. You can install Outlook Express by running IE5SETUP.EXE from the IE5
floder located on your CD or through the WIndows Update Website."
PC is running Windows XP Pro SP1 with MS Office XP (2002) Pro complete.
Logged on as local Administrator. Require Outlook because we are running
Exchange Server 2000 on local LAN.
Outlook Express V. 6.01 is installed and can run. So, there is a
newer/greater version installed, but it still will not start. I know this is
a registry problem, but where?
Searched Discussion Group and found TJ's "Cannot start Outlook" dated
8/18/05 2:15 PM PST and tried all suggestions to his problem, all without
success. Found article KB287683, but those suggestions failed. Have also
tried the KB 315341 "How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of
Windows XP". Nothing.
Background: Outlook WAS functioning fine on this PC using MS Office XP
Standard.
User needed MS Access. Not part of our standard MS Office XP Open License
install. I have several licensed copies of MS Office Professional.
Uninstalled the MS Office 2002 (XP) Standard version and installed the MS
Office XP Professional version. Then installed SP1, SP2, and SP3 for MS
Office XP (2002). Then REMOVED Outlook Express using Add/Remove Windows
Components in the Add/Remove Programs app. No reason, just did not want user
to get confused as to which email program to use.
All other Office modules working, Word, Excell, Access, etc. But Outlook
refused to function. So, added Outlook Express back on using the Add/Remove
Windows Components in the Add/Remove Programs app. Started OE 6.01 just fine.
But Outlook still errors on startup.
Have tried uninstalling and re-installing MS Office XP Standard and
Professional. Found IE5SETUP.EXE on the CD but it will not run saying that I
already have a higher version of Outlook Express on the PC. Even got this
message after I had used Add/Remove Wondows Components to remove OE 6.01.
Curious. Outlook Express was supposed to be "uninstalled" yet I still got the
"Already has higher
version..." error message when I tried to run IE5SETUP.EXE.
Used the Recovery Console to check system files with sfc /scannow switch.
All OK. Machine is patched to latest level, KB902400 (MS05-051) & KB905414.
One other issue: I started getting the following message at logon as
Administrator "One of the Files containing the system's Registry data had to
be recoved by use of a log or alternate file. The recovery was sucessful."
I ran regedit and found that under the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\ for
Outlook Express {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} had only the version
key listed and NOT the StubPath, ComponentID, CloneUser, Locale or Installed
keys, as in other machines on my network, such as the following listing from
MY box:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}]
"Version"="6,0,2800,1106"
@="Microsoft Outlook Express 6"
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001
"Locale"="EN"
"ComponentID"="MailNews"
"CloneUser"=dword:00000001
"StubPath"="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\setup50.exe" /APP:OE
/CALLER:WINNT /user /install
If the StubPath is NOT listed in the registry, how can Outlook find the
necessary components of Outlook Express to function? Which is exactly what is
happening.
Also, I found NO Key for IE... even though it is installed, or at least
that's what Windows Compents says under Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel. Isn't this Key supposed to be listed in the registry? This is the IE
Key on all my other machines:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}]
@="Internet Explorer 6"
"ComponentID"="BASEIE40_W2K"
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001
"Locale"="en"
"StubPath"=%SystemRoot%\system32\ie4uinit.exe
"Version"="6,0,2800,1106"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active
Setup\Installed\Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}\AuthorizedCDFPrefix]
I'm sure this problem is in the registry. Does anybody know how to make a
good Backup of the Registry in Win XP? We used to have a tool on the TOOLS
menu of the SYSTEM INFORMATION app, but now it's no longer there.
Searched KB but found articles only suggesting to run IE5SETUP.EXE and that
does not work. Any ideas? Where do I go from here?
