Cannot start Visio 2007 - just getting startup files??

I'm running Vista 2007 and Visio 2007. Core Duo machine, 2 gigs
memory, drivers are up to date as far as I can tell. Dell Inspirion
1505E laptop.

After an attempt at updating XP and then doing a couple of clean
installs, I had everything running fairly good under Vista until a
couple of days ago. Now when I try to start Visio, every installer
program I have tries to start. All other programs function as well as
they normally do under Vista.

The error message (after closing a bunch of screens) says:

"Visio was unable to run "aawsepersonal.exe" CreateProcess returned a
value of 740. You can continue to run Visio. Click OK to continue.

When I click continue, I get the next installer in alphabetical order.
And that prevents Visio from starting. It will go through the whole
list with some items opening up 8 or 9 screens.

I tried the repair function for Visio - that failed.

I tried the Office Suite repair function - didn't work.

I uninstalled Visio and re-installed.

Ran chkdsk.

I ran virus and spyware scans and checked the startup list in
msconfig. Looks good.

I ran a couple of registry cleaners.

I tried to do a system restore to a previous good point - for that I
got a Vista error message (no surprise - I've never had it work right
yet)

I loaded a known registry backup from a few days back where everything
was working OK but that didn't change anything.

I haven't been able to find anything on the Microsoft support site but
may have missed it. (searching for the word CreateProcess doesn't
turn up anything much).

The most common thing I hear from Microsoft lately is, "Gee, I guess
you better do to a clean install." (All Vista related to this point)
but I've had to reinstall Visio before also, just not for this
particular problem.

Has anyone seen this problem and/or have ideas about what I can do
about it?

Many thanks in advance,

Ed

This is your problem.
Go back to XP.
Neither of the organisations I'm doing on-site work for at present are
touching Vista with a bargepole. In fact they've both bought a stock
of XPpro to see them through the next few years 'just in case'.

Thanks for the advice. Personally, I think you're correct and am
planning for yet another round of system configuration, etc.

I like many of the features in Vista but it's a long ways from being
stable for me. One of the features I like is the search function but
I found dozens of critical errors relating to search last night. I've
had to rebuild the index on a number of occasions.
