Cannot type in cell, or I can only type one letter in a cell

Sometimes when I am operating in a spreadsheet I begin to type in a cell and the program will only allow me to type one character in the cell. Then it will not respond to any additional key strokes. Following this problem, I can sometimes move from the selected cell by the arrow keys and return to the cell where I can begin typing again.
Other times i can't type any characters in any selected cells. To remedy the situation I can then sometimes save the workbook, then it will work. Or other times I have to save close and restart the program. It seems to be occurring more frequently.
Help please.

Do you have any event macros in your workbook?

Is it only one workbook, or every one?

If only one, does it help to copy the sheet to a fresh workbook (via
Copy/Paste)?

I am not real familiar with Macros, but when I selected "Macros" under the tools file, no macros were listed.

It occurs in at least two workbooks and multiple worksheets in each of those two workbooks.

Any other thoughts. Is there something else I should be looking for in the Macros feature?
