Cannot update office 2003

Wonder why ! Have no problems in updating windows xp but on office 2003 I get
crazy: Download works properly and installation starts promissingly but at
the end it says: "Installation failed" respectively in German "Installation
fehlgeschlagen". After three times of trial and error I gave up. What is my
mistake???
Thanks for advice.

Can you check in your Event Viewer to see if it is a ID 1603 error that is shown for MsInstaller. Please post back with that answer

Peter,
I have the Error ID 1603.
I have done everything in Susan's linked white paper
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304498
XP Pro updates fine. But Office 2003 SP2, Visio 2003 SP2 and Junkmailer
Update do fail to install.
NOTE: After I booted with the minimum MSCONFIG setting XP had to be
reactivate (within 3 days), but even that did not solve the issue.

Thanks,
Volker

The reason I asked is that I have come across this in our shop. When the install seems to go correctly and at the end the error box comes up with only "Installation Failed" and you get the Error 1603 in the Event viewer then here is the fix that I have found for this particular error.

1. Download the LISTool from the Office download site. Do not execute it just yet
2. Download the full SP2 file. About 101mb
3. Open any Office app and go to Help\Detect and Repair and activate it.
4. Reboot
5. Execute the LISTool by selecting all the Office apps that you have in there. Then make sure you select the Enable Option and NOT the Disable one.
6. Reboot
7. Try the install of the SP2 with the Full file that you have downloaded.

This should install the SP2.

Good luck and let us know.

Hi, Peter,
very unusual, but I'm happy again!
My computer finally swallowed the update.
Cheers!

I am a user only and have learned just enough about computers to keep my new
Dell virus/spyware free. I could understand very little of your
instructions, Peter, as I am not as computer savvy as many here. Your
instructions require more knowledge then I have and I take it you have a
career in computers.

Computers are just too complicated for the common man like myself.
Microsoft has made some improvements with XP, but operating systems are still
way too complicated. We shouldn't have to be experts to use the darn things
without becoming frustrated! If our automobiles required as much input as
computers do most of us would be walking. MS has to address the frustrations
we non-geek types have with mind-boggling update problems we encounter fairly
regularly.

I'll wait for the CD as we only have a dial-up connection out here in rural
Virginia. Download times are mind-boggling and then maybe the new Office
update will download better. I can only hope!
