Cannot upgrade from 98 to V.X

Aaron Tucker

I've consulted the help files from Microsoft but i cannot get it to
upgrade to V.X. I continue to get the error message Upgrade Cannot Be
Verified.

I've installed 98 , copied 98, and even tried to use the Office98
Macintosh Edition CD as the Upgrade eligable folder.

Can anyone give me concise directions help me along?

Thanks

Greetings Aaron,

The following Microsoft Knowledgebase article should help to resolve this
issue:

313286.MacOFFX: "Upgrade Verification" Message When You Start an Office v. X
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];313286

The most important point is the last paragraph:

"After you select the appropriate folder, click Choose. The installation
should continue without error.
DO NOT SELECT THE CD-ROM ITSELF OR ANY OF THE SUBFOLDERS IN THE APPROPRIATE
MICROSOFT OFFICE FOLDER

NOTE: . Doing this may cause Setup to fail when you confirm the upgrade
status of the earlier version."

So, when verifying the upgrade, choose the Microsoft Office 98 folder on
your Office 98 CD, not any of the subfolders and not simply the CD itself.

I never get to click Choose because i only have the option of Open and
Cancel. Office V.X just refuses to see Office 98 anywhere. I've tried
all the folders on the CD-ROM (original CD) all the microsoft office
98 folders on my hard drive where I have it installed. Now i can't
even use my old version without removing V.X because it won't let me
access my old files without completing the upgrade process.

Any further help would be great.

I am having exactly the same problem - a Choose button never appears,
just an Open button. I hope that someone from Microsoft can help with
this!

BTW, Aaron, you can get back to using the Office 98 apps by doing a
"Get Info" on any Office file (such as a Word file), clicking the
pointer next to "Open with:", selecting the older version of the
Office app (such as Word), and clicking the "Change All" button. You
need to do this for each kind of file that you use. Hope that helps.
