Cannot use Word as editor in MS 2003

D

David T.

I have two problems.
Background: Purchased new HP laptop from HP last summer w/XP home and paid
extra for MS2003 basic. It came loaded on the machine, but I was also
siupplied a CD (with product key).

My original problem. I used MS Word as my editor in Outlook (MS Office
2003). About 6 months after I bought the machine, it wouldn't allow me to
use Word as the
editor any more. It gave me an error message that said, either Word was not
installed, it was the wrong version, or it was opertating incorrectly. I've
run Outlook and Office repair quite a few times, and reinstalled Office
twice from the CD. I've also read the FAQ for a similar problem with MS
2000. Help.

I did contact HP tech support who gave up after 11+ emails/calls. They said
it was a MS issue.

When I went to the MS website, it asked for the PID, which I provided off
the "about" link. MS came back with the reply that it does no support this
version in this country (MS Office 2003). I did notice that the PID had
"oem" in
the code, even though I purchased a separate full basic version from HP.
So, why doesn't MS support this?

Office Basic is an OEM only edition and does not come with the full MS
Support - one reason I stay away from OEM software whenever possible.

Have you installed any of the Office Service Packs?

OEM versions are supported by the supplier. However there are usually 2 free
support tickets. See the EULA to be sure. Instead of using the we call them
instead and point out that you are using a free ticket.

Anyway, about your issue;
Close both Word and Outlook (use Task Manager to verify that their processes
are indeed stopped).
Start-> Run; Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll

You might have to restart after that. See if your issue is solved now

I've constantly updated the software. I've installed service pack 2 and
several updates. I didn' have this problem at first.

BTW, thanks for replying.

:)

That got it. You don't know how many hours I've sat with HP tech support to
resolve this issue, only to be finally told to get lost (on my last call).
You solved it in a few minutes. Many thanks. BTW, did I say thanks?
