Cannot view embedded PowerPoint pictures in Word X for Mac...

Hello,

I couldn't find anything on this topic on the news group; apologies if I
overlooked a discussion...

I am using Word X for Mac Service Release 1 under Panther. My problem is
that I cannot view embedded PowerPoint slides in my Word documents that
have been created by Windows users. The icture is replaced with a box with
an X inside.
When I click on the box, the error message that appears is: "Cannot edit
PowerPoint.Slide.8" I do have PowerPoint installed and the document plus
embedded object can be viewed just fine on my PC using Office 2003 for
Windows 2000.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joachim

Sorry: It's a bug. PC PowerPoint can create slides Office X PowerPoint
sometimes can't open.

Go up to Office 2004 and you should have no trouble.

Cheers

Does this also apply to other pictures created by PC users? I also use Word X
release 1, and it's maddening that some docs from PC Word users contain
red crosses instead of pictures and some contain pictures that I can see - it
seems almost random which result I get. And the trouble with saying
'update to Word 2004' is that if I do this, then I won't be able to use EndNote
until they sort out a Mac version of EN8. Given their hopeless incompetence
over the Windoze EN8 version, this does not fill me with confident
anticipation.

Actually, EndNote is causing some of your red Xs, see here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Add-Ins.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)
(see Note after first few lines)

And note that SR 1 is not fully updated:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Update.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

One workaround for the EndNote/2004 problem, and this will not suit
everyone's workflow but may be worth considering, is to leave all EndNote
formatting to the very end of editing. You can enter the raw EndNote fields
without CWYW installed (either copy and paste or drag and drop) and then
temporarily open up the doc (or a copy) in Word X just to format the biblio.
This may also be a workaround if CWYW causes crashing in Word X, you can
keep it uninstalled for the most part and only install it when you need to
format the citations. I find this viable but I spend more time
writing/editing than I do exchanging documents or sending them to anyone
else.

However, you should never assume that upgrading will solve a problem unless
you know exactly what causes the problem and there is a KB article or other
authoritative information somewhere promising that that specific fix is in
the next version.
