Can't access contacts when writing an email

I want to be able to click on the to box in an email message and have the addresses form my Contacts List come up. When I do this an error comes up. My problem is that all of my address are in the Contacts folder. All the other address books are empty. Is it possible for me to access my contacts from an email message so I can easily find the contact I want to send my email to? The only way I can get to my contacts is by clicking on the Contacts Shortcut or by clicking on the file/folder in the folder list. If I try to open the address book from the tools menu it pops up an error. Can anyone help!?!?!

Make sure you have configured your Outlook Address Book correctly.
Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

I followed your directions and everything looks like it should. I didn't have to make any changes. When I clicked change for the OAB it showed Contact:personal Folders
Is this what is supposed to be there. Is there anything else I can do. Again my problem is I can't get my contacts addreses to come up when I click the To.. Button in an email message
The only way I can get to my Contacts is by clicking the Contacks buttom on the Outlook Shortcuts Bar. Hopefully we can figure out how to make this work:)

I can't figure this out from here. Only you can.
When you click on the To: Field in a new message window to bring up the
Outlook Address Book, what do you see in the "Show Names from the:"
dropdown? How many folders are there that you can display?

When I click the To: field in a new message window to bring up the Outlook Address Book A thing pops up and says: The address list could not be displayed . The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Oulook Help.
If you press ok the box with the Show names from the: Outlook Address Book (No Entries in this Address...)
Contacts (brings up the above message)
Personal Address Book (Nothing Happens)

Then re-read the instructions I posted. You missed something there. You
still haven't configured the Outlook Address Book Service to display your
Contacts Folder correctly. You should also remove the Personal Address Book
reference. You are not using it.

I am having exactly the same problem. If I try to add an OAB or pst as you
described I get an error message,
"The account you have added is not fully configured. It might not work
properly until re-configured correctly."
Also, when I select the File: Data File Management I get the error message
"There was an error locating one of the items needed to complete this
operation. It might have been deleted".
I have reinstalled MS Office and Outlook and even Windows XP Pro and get the
errors again. Contacts appear in the contact folder but no address book and
no addresses or address books available for new messages.

Start at the beginning and post what you are tying to do, the steps you are
using, Outlook versions, and error messages. None of this makes sense. OAB's
and PST files are not the same thing despite what you seem to imply.

Sorry it isn't clear, I thought I described the problem and all the error
messages pretty well, anyway, it is fixed. I fixed it by going to Control
Panel- Mail and removing the only profile there, Outlook, and then creating
a new profile. Now everything works fine. It wasn't quite that simple though
because after removing the profile Outlook I tried to create a new profile
with the same name and kept getting the error message that a profile with
that name already existed. Even if I tried to add a new profile with some
unique bizarre name I would get the same error message and could not create
a new profile. Finally I went into the Registry and deleted the profiles
there (it had all the unique profile names I had tried and the profile
Outlook numerous times as I had tried to create it). Once I did that I was
able to add a new profile named outlook and things are working as they
should.
This all started because I upgraded from Win 98SE to XP Pro and didn't
import-export my Outlook files properly. I saved the original outlook.pst on
a disk and then after installing XP I just replaced that outlook.pst folder
with the old one that had all my old folders and contacts etc. Apparently
that was not totally compatible and corrupted something.
