can't access transferred contacts

I transferred Outlook from Outlook 2000 (Windows 98SE)to
new computer with Outlook 2002 (Windows XP).

All the contacts transferred and appear when I have
Contacts open in the program.

When I am in the Contacts screen and click the new
message icon, it works. However, when I am in the Inbox
screen and click the new message icon to open the message
form, and then click the "To" button I get this message:
"The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts
folder associated with this address list could not be
opened..."

Is there a fix?

Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book. If it is not listed, back up one step
and add it. If it is, then click on Change. to make sure the Contacts
folder(s) you want to display are listed. You may need to enable the
Contacts Folder as an e-mail address book by R clicking the Folder >
Properties and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box.
Make sure you restart Outlook after making these changes.

followed your instructions (deleting Personal Address
Book, which had been showing as the address book along th
way) but I get the same message. I am attaching a word
doc of 2 printscreens of the settings I now have - that
don't work.

When you open the Outlook Address Book, what do you see now?
Does your Contacts Folder contain Contacts with valid electronic addresses?

Well, nothing happened.

If I go to Tools> Address Book, I get the same message
that I referred to in the original post:"The address list
could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated
with this address list could not be opened..."

The individual contacts do have valid email addresses; I
can use them to send email when I click Contacts on the
Folder List and then highlight an individual record. I
then click the new message icon and a new message form
appears with the email address filled in. I can then
send the email.

I just noticed something that may help you help me. When
I close that message I then get a dialog box:Address
Book. On the left is a box: "Type Name or Select From
List", on the right "Show Names from the:"
In the right hand box, it says Contacts. Everything else
is blank. The dropdowns for the right hand box also show
another "contacts" and an Outlook Address Book. When I
put the Outlook Address Book in the box, the white box at
the bottom says: "No entries in this address book"
When I put the (second) "contacts" in the right hand box,
I do get the list of names.

Then you're fine. Just remove the old invalid Contacts reference here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.
