Can't access Word Preferences

My preferences menu is grayed out. I'd like to make some preference changes, but can't. Help?!

It might be corrupted. I would consider removing it from the Preferenes
and relaunching Word to let the application re-create it from scratch,

Open a Word doc and try again. It is normally greyed out with no file
open.
