Can't access Word templates, only Works

O

Orrie

My computer came with Microsoft Works installed (v. 2002, I think). I
installed Office 2003 for Small Business, then loaded in some stationery
templates that I created. They are in the Templates folder specified in Word
(Tools/Options/File Locations), C:\documents and settings\myname\application
data\Microsoft\templates

However, I can't access them from within Word. When I want to start a new
document, the only option on the File menu is New Works Template. When I
click on that, I get a listing of all kinds of templates for use with Works
applications, such as Baby Announcement and Recipe Book, but not my own Word
templates or the usual Office business-style templates.

A quick search for .DOT files shows 56 templates spread across a few
different folders. My stationery templates and a Normal.dot are in the
folder mentioned above. Several others are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\templates\1033. I don't see the Works templates listed, but they may
use a different suffix instead of .DOT.

What's going on? How can change Word from its current Works orientation to
have it behave as component of Office 2003, so when I want to start a new
document, I will be able to select the template from a list of Office
templates.

One other point: my Normal.DOT template is 123,900 Kb, which seems wildly
beyond "normal" size. How can redo it. Should I just try re-installing Words
2003 from my Office CD?

Thanks for you help.
