Can't access Word

Help! Can't access my Word files. I click on file icon,
Word logo comes up but hourglass remains and file does not
appear. CTRL+ALT+DEL instead of end task window I get MS-
DOS file saying system is busy (nonsense since I've closed
everything else down)I've reinstalled Windows 98 and Word
2000 but nothing works. Can I retrieve my files?
