Can't add equation editor from value pack installer

Hello,

I am trying to install the equation editor from my Microsoft Word v.X
install CD, but have been stymied so far. I first insert the CD, double
click on the value pack folder, and open the value pack installer.
Everything seems to work fine to that point. I then select the Equation
Editor from the available option in the value pack installer, and I
click continue. After a couple of seconds of processing, an error
message comes up:

Error creating file.
1008:5,-5000 Access denied error

"OK" is the only option, which then brings up "An error occurred that
prevented the process from completing."

Does anyone have any insight into this problem? I'm running OS X
version 10.3. I'd really like to install equation editor.

Thanks for any assistance!

No, we tried installation both as the regular user (who has install
powers) and as an administrator. We ran into the same problem both
times.

Then as a next step I would try running Disk Utility - Repair Permissions &
Verify Disk, then try the installation again. Also, check permissions for
the folders involved if you know what they are. I'm not certain that these
steps will correct the problem, but they help orient the troubleshooting so
you're starting with as clean a slate as possible.

Is there any sort of network involved here? That may have some influence on
access to to what the installer is trying to modify... Again, just trying to
narrow down the possibilities.

The -5000 suggests some sort of file access error, but I haven't personally
seen it before. You might take a look at the MindVision page;

http://www.mindvision.com/macvise_faq.asp?Action=Q&ID=229

and if there is another installer on the CD try using it - the one you tried
may be attempting to install something in a restricted location (such as the
System Folder) without required authentication. In fact, unless you omitted
it from your post, I'm surprised you didn't get the OS X password prompt in
the first place.

Afraid I haven't dealt with Office X/OS X 10.3 in quite some time, so I'm
not sure what else to offer. If you don't make any progress perhaps another
responder currently using that combination will have something more to
offer.

If you are going to do a lot of equations, unless you are very strapped
for money, get Mathtype. You can buy it online, and is not expensive. It
is more powerful than the equation editor, and adds menus on the menu
bar. I never have any problems with it.
