Can't Add New Appointments to Outlook 2003

When I attempt to add a new appointment it's treated as if it was a
recurrent event and then does not save. I've tried to add a new calendar,
but it behaves the same way. Old appointments appear to be OK, but I can;t
addd any new ones. Outlook 2003 is running on a stand alone PC. Any
suggestions on how to get the calendar back to normal appreciated. Cheers
