Can't add to the dictionary

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: imap I am having the same problem reported by Dunc. And, I went through the recommended "make a change and then resave" steps.

Still no improvement.

I sure wish there were a REAL fix to this problem. It's pretty frustrating.

No idea who Dunc is or what he said. Could you explain the problem
you're seeing and what you've tried to fix it?

Hi, Bill.

I am running the current Entourage and OSX 10.6.1 and have not been able to add words to my Dictionary during spell check. I *am* able to do so in MS Word -- just not in an email in Entourage.

The add option is grayed out.

"Dunc" is a person who started a question set a month or two ago with the same subject; that forum is closed but his problem wasn't resolved.

Suggestions included adding something new to the custom dictionary then saving it. I've done that to no effect.

So, any suggestions short of a complete reinstall would be appreciated.

Karl.

Did you make sure the same custom dictionary was selected in the
Entourage preferneces?

Be sure you have a valid dictionary selected.

Go to Entourage menu --> Preferences... --> General Preferences -->
Spelling. Click the Dictionaries... button and go select your custom
dictionary file. Mine is located here:

Macintosh HD:Users:myhome:Library:preferences:Microsoft:Office
2008:Custom Dictionary.

You can create a new Custom Dictionary in Microsoft Word under Word menu
--> Preferences... --> Spelling & Grammar --> Dictionaries... button.

Hope this helps!

Corentin,

Actually, it wasn't even highlighting the custom dictionary I had -- it was grayed-out. I had created it in "Documents" so that I could back it up easily. You got me thinking and Bill's question got me wondering....

Bill,

I had created a new dictionary using Word called "Karl's Custom Dictionary.dic" and Word wasn't objecting. Now that I look at it it's not clear it's been using it even though I'd point it to it. (I'll have to see where it is putting those things I've been adding.) So, I went an old dictionary I had on Windows and copied it into "Documents" and voila! I checked it by putting a misspelled word in through an email "Add". So, there was something about the name, perhaps, that it didn't like though by having a pointer to a file I'd assumed I could use any name I wanted to. Interesting....

Anyways, thanks very much to you both for asking / suggesting.

Looks like the culprit is: you can't use just any "mychoiceofname.dic" for this file.

Karl.
