Can't adjust data label width in column chart

Any way to adjust the width of data labels?

I have made a column chart and my data label simply says "9%". But the "9"
is on one line and the "%" on the next (One above the other). There seems to
be ample space across the column width, so I don't know why the data label
width doesn't expand. The only way to keep the "9%" together is to reduce
the font size, but then the text is too small to read. The grab handles on
the right and left don't do anything but drag the whole data label to the
right or left.

A previous post on the subject from Jim Gordon in April 2003 states "If you
simply type the name of the chart title into the Formatting Palette's chart
name field the type should automatically size to fit.", but I'm talking
about the data label, not the chart title (The label is generated by the
data on the chart).

Any ideas?

The only way I've found to reproduce your problem (XL 10.1.5, OS X
10.3.2) is to format the data labels to display text vertically:

Ctrl-click on the data labels and choose Format Data Labels. in the
Alignment tab, Orientation section, is the box on the left, with

T
e
x
t

displayed vertically selected?

If that's not it, feel free to send me a copy of your workbook, and
I'll take a look at it. Zip or Stuff the file so that it makes it
past my filters.
