can't attach Word file to Entourage e-mail (-199)

When I attempt to attach a Word document to a new Entourage e-mail, I get
the error message "The action could not be completed. An unknown error
(-199) occurred.) I am able to send the document by using the "send as
attachment" feature of Word. Does anyone know what this is caused by and a
solution? Running Tiger (problem existed before this), Entourage 2004
(11.1.0), and Word 2004 (11.1).

Hi Jon,

What are the steps you are taking to attach the document to the email? Are
you dragging it into the Entourage attachment window or what? Does it make
any difference if you append the .doc extension to the Word file?

Good question - I have tried both ways, trying to drag it in as well as use
the "add attachments" icon, both to no avail. Also, I have tried re-saving
to be sure that the .doc extension is there, and that doesn't seem to help
either. It is almost as if there is something corrupt in the file itself,
because when this starts happening, I have found that I can copy everything
out of it and paste it into a new document, and (usually, not always) it
will work.

Hi Jon,

Okay, that helps. Let's find out if it *is* a corrupt doc.

Turn on the Show/Hide formatting tool (¶). Carefully copy all but the very
last paragraph mark and paste into a blank new Word document window. Give
it a different name for the time being. Now try. Any better?

Beth -

Thanks for the advice. It was the document (in fact, multiple documents I
have tried to attach) causing the problem. I have no idea why they are
corrupted, but now I at least know what to do when this happens.

Thanks again for the help,

Jon
