can't calculate in excel

This sounds stupid, but I can no longer calculate in excel. I was
fooling around with preferences, and while trying to solve one issue, I
started a new one. This problem seems isolated to this one workbook,
but to all cells. When I type in a formula, I just get the formula,
not the result of it. It even happens with the most simple formula.
Any idea how I fix this? And how I did this in the first place?
thanks,
Daisy

Daily,

I can think of 2 reasons:
a. You are not typing an "+" sign before the formula
b. you have set the prefences for manual calculation.

If it is the latter, go to preferences, calculation, and click the
automatic button.

I hope this allows you to crunch more numbers again!

Daisy,

One more possibility

c. Check Preferences - view - and see if "formulas" is checked under
"window options".

Another reason could be that some or all the fields are declared as text.
Try selecting a cell, formatting it to General and put in a formula.

GL with it.

It is early in the am - lame excuse. But, sorry for mispelling your
name and, of course, you have to type an equal sign "=" before a
formula.
