can't change formatting of object or ungroup; all is grey

I created figures with captions, grouped the art with the caption, then
formatted the object as inline with text. Now I want to change it back to
anything other than inline with text so I can ungroup it and make changes,
but when I select the object and choose "format object," all options are grey
and not clickable. This is true even if I copy the whole thing to a new
document.

Try dragging or pasting the grouped object into a Drawing Canvas,
then ungroup.
