Can't change grammar settings in grammar and style options, v.X

I'm using Word v.X, and I'm trying to create a custom grammar and
writing style. I need it to, for instance, disallow contractions. I
went to Preferences, Spelling and Grammar, Writing Style: Custom, and
then Settings. There, I can check and uncheck the items under "Grammar
and style options", but doing so doesn't add them to the Require list,
and regardless of whether or not an item is selected, Word checks
grammar the same way and does not alert me to contractions.

The help file just says: "In the Grammar and style options box, select
the options you want. If you're using the keyboard and want to open
a drop-down list under Require, press the up and down arrow keys to
move to the option you want. Then press the space bar to open the
list."

I'm assuming this means that clicking on the check box *ought* to put
it in the Require list and offer me a drop-down list, right? Is this a
bug, or do I have some other setting that's screwing with it?

I really need to get this working for some upcoming transcription. Any
ideas?

Thanks in advance!
