can't change or add a macro

Hi all,

When I change anything (even the slightest change) in any macro in any of
the modules of Normal or when I add a new macro, next time I can't open
Word. Then I have to delete normal.dot and put in a copy of the normal.dot
as it was before I made a change. Very annoying and I have no idea what
causes this phenomenon. What causes this problem and how can I solve it
(once and for all)?

I am looking forward to your advice.

It is possible that your default normal.dot is corrupt. Delete normal.dot
and allow Word to create a new one. You may have too many macros in the
normal template. Copy the macros you may wish to change often from the
default copy to the new one. Create a new template as an add-in to hold the
remainder of the macros.

Graham,

Thank you for your advice.
allow Word to create a new one
How do I do that?
Will I lose the standard way Word makes my documents?
Will I lose my custom buttons, toolbars or even more?
What else wil I lose?
too many macros
The number is 71, most are small macro's. The majority is in a module called
NewMacros, how that module got its name I don't know.
Could 71 really be too much?
Copy the macros you may wish to change often from the default copy to the
new one
schould I copy the macro's to Word first? And from Word to the new
normal.dot?
Create a new template as an add-in to hold the remainder of the macros.
Please elaborate on this:
- how to create a new template (what template and where?)
- how to make a template an add-in?
- what do you mean by "remainder of the macros"?

I'm really sorry for all these questions Graham; I can work a bit with
macros but I do not understand much of the system behind it, it differs too
much (for me) from how Excel works with macros.

Jack.

Rename normal.dot to normal.old with Word closed.

No - Word will create a new template with default settings.

You won't lose anything. You can copy the styles, toolbars, macros etc from
the old template to the newly created one, with the aid of the Organizer -
ALT+F8 > Organizer

called NewMacros, how that module got its name I don't know.

Macros created by the recorder automatically are saved in the New Macros
module. Could 71 be too many? Yes. Move some of them to a new template.

Not a problem - see http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm
