Can't change .pst file from Read Only?

I am attempting to transfer my old .pst file (2002 Outlook) from an old hard
drive where the computer failed (system was XP) to a new machine running
Vista. One of the steps is to copy the old .pst file from the old drive to
the new system, then to change the .pst file from Read Only and point Outlook
to it.
I can change (unhighlight) the Read Only box and Apply but when I look again
at the file the Read Only box is again highlighted?
How can I change this file from Read Only so that Outlook can attempt to
operate with it?
I understand that Outlook 2002 and Vista are not compatable but was hoping
to at least retrieve my contact addresses. Yes, I am very new to vista!
Thanks for any help provided.

You did copy the PST to the main hard drive, correct?

Brian,
I created a folder directly under the new hard drive called "Old Hard Drive"
and copied all the files I needed to transfer from my old hard drive to it.
One of the files I copied to this folder was my Outlook .pst file(s). I have
directed my Outlook 2002 program to this file. However, because its a Read
Only file I assume it can't be operated on? I am a new individual Vista user
at home. Are there some permissions I need to change the file from Read Only?

Copy the old PST out of its current place and put it under your Windows user
folder. Use Windows Explorer to remove the read-only attribute. Open the
Mail applet in Control Panel and click the Data Files button. Click Add,
browse to the PST you just copied, select it and click OK. Answer any other
prompts you get until you're back to where you clicked Data Files. If
you're happy using your current PST as the delivery location, close the Mail
applet and start Outlook. What do you see?

If you want to use the added (old) PST as the delivery location (i.e., your
default folders), don't close the Mail applet. Instead, click E-mail
Accounts, select View or change existing e-mail accounts, click Next and
change the "Delivery new e-mail to the following location" drop-down so that
it points to the PST you just added. Chances are it will have the same
display name as the existing PST, so just choose the other PST in the
drop-down. Click Finish. Close the Mail applet and start Outlook. What do
you see?
