Can't change Start Menu icons for Office 2000 shortcuts in XP?

Ant

Hi. How come I cannot change the icons in Start Menu for Office 2000
shortcuts? "Change Icon..." button is greyed out. I noticed the target
box does not show the typical .exe.

Thank you in advance. :)

Hi, Phillip.

If you hit Start and select any programme - not the Primaries - you can
right click the Start shortcut, select Properties and change the icon from
there.

What did you mean by programme and primaries? I did right click on Start
Menu, highlight an Office 2000 shortcut, right click, and click properties.

The installer-created shortcuts have some of the usual shortcut functions
disabled. The easiest way to get around this is to locate the program and
create a new shortcut using either "Create a shortcut here" or "Copy"
followed by "Paste shortcut". You can then move the shortcut wherever you
want it and customize it in the usual ways.

The Primaries are those shortcuts with an expansion arrow.

I may not have understood you, but what I meant was - for instance
Start/Programs/Microsoft Office, rightclick Word/Properties where you can
change the icon for Word. You do only get a limited choice. Access for
example gives a choice of about 40, others, only one.

Thanks. I was wondering why the shortcut properties looked odd.

Ed, Gary Smith explained the problem well. I guess I will have to find
the shortcuts manually and copy them.

Thanks. I was wondering why the shortcut properties looked odd.

Is there any side effects after replacing the original shortcuts? All I
am planning to do is using the EXE files and using custom icons (.ico).

Hi Ant,

The side effect for an individual user by switching
to Windows vs Windows Installer managed shortcuts
are basically that if you do a Detect and Repair
and check the [x] restore my shortcuts, the ones
that would be restored would be the original ones.
