Can't click on a document and open Word 2007

I'm now officially at the tearing the hair out stage: For some reason, when
I click on a word doc, I get the (typical) message "Windows cannot find
'C:\Users\Simon\Desktop\Doc1.docx'. Make sure you typed the name correctly,
and then try again." It's annoying that Windows can't seem to find a
document that I'm actually looking at on the desktop.

I see that numerous people have reported the same problem on the net, but I
have yet to find a working solution.

I am running Vista Home Premium and the Ultimate Edition of Office 2007. I
have checked that the file associations for .doc and .docx are correctly
registered against Word; I have run sfc /scannow; I have done the office
detect and repair; I have temporarily disabled my (AVG) antivirus program.
All to no avail. I have no plugins operational in Word.

If I open Word first, I can import any of the doc files on the pc without
problem. I can actually create a document, save it to the desktop and then
close Word; subsequently clicking on the doc I have just created leads to the
error message above. If I change the default association for .doc files to
MS Works, clicking brings up that program without difficulty - yet when I
change the association back to Word I'm back where I started.

This has got to be a simple registry fix - and hopefully someone out there
can steer me toward the solution. Yours in desperate anticipation...

And just for completeness, I've just uninstalled Office 2007, rebooted and
reinstalled it. NO difference.

...and now, we have an interesting situation: I have just discovered that if
I turn off UAC, all of a sudden Word is back to FULL functionality - not
only that, but the problem with not being able to send directly to an email
recipient has also disappeared.

So guys - how do I have to adjust things to be able to turn UAC back on
again but retain the functionality I have just got back???

One step closer to a full problem resolution...

Then that is a Q for a Vista group.
Did you perhaps Custom install Office, or install on an account with limited
privelidges

Nope - standard install of Ultimate Edition into my own (sole on this laptop)
account with administrator privileges.

I've just turned UAC back on again and once more I've lost functionality
with Word - so UAC is definitely the culprit and that makes it some sort of a
configuration issue.

If I don't get this fixed soon, my wife is going to hit me with the laptop
as I've been here for 24 hrs solid trying to sort out this poser.

Did you get a solution from the Vista forum? I've been struggling w/ the
same thing, and I've finally decided not to take it anymore!
